Crisco Fried Chicken

Good Housekeeping, 1953

O.M.G. Check out the headline of this fried chicken recipe:  " you can eat em' seven days a week!"  Oh, the 50's....everyone was so innocent!
OK maybe you shouldn't eat this seven days a week, but once in a while might be ok.
The first line of the recipe grosses me out a bit " disjoint frying chicken". I don't want to read about "joints" in my recipe. People were also very blunt in the 50's. Go beyond that for a pan fried delicacy!

Sioux Bee Honey "Honey Date Bars"

Good Housekeeping, 1953

I love these old-time packages the honey came in, this was before the little squeeze honey bears I have always known.
Honey Date Bars...This is a recipe that could still be featured in Good Housekeeping today. It sounds pretty healthy (except for the shortening part). Dates, nuts, and honey? You can't go wrong!

Campfire Marshmallow Foolproof Fudge and Rice Crispie Treats

Good Housekeeping, 1953

I'm a little late with the fudge recipe, since it's just after Christmas, but go ahead and make some for your New Year's party, or as an anytime treat.
This is one of the earliest recipes I have seen for rice crispie treats. Back then they were just simply called 'marshmallow crispy squares'. I haven't made this version, so I need some feedback. Looks yummy! This version is a classic in the truest sense of the word!

Starkist Tuna Pinwheel Pie

Good Housekeeping, 1953

I'm putting this one on my blog for all you tuna lovers out there....not me! It looks like my worst nightmare. But if tuna is your thing, this is an interesting twist. Alter it to your tastes....

Del Monte Raisin Tiny Chess Pies

Good Housekeeping
November, 1953

Have you ever had a chess pie before? I haven't. But I love chess and I like pie so this fits my theme. Why they're called chess pies I'm not really sure, but it looks like it's a raisin-nut pie. Sounds interesting.
Do they still make Del Monte raisins anywhere?? If not, Sun Maid will do.
Enjoy these at your next game night!

Carnation's Best Pumpkin Pie

November, 1953
Good Housekeeping

Fall is right around the corner, can you imagine your house filled with the warm scent of this pie?? Better than a Renuzit, that's for sure!
Carnation is still the best in a creamy, rich pumpkin pie. Here is their classic recipe...

Del Monte Pineapple Pastry, Danish Style

Good Housekeeping
November, 1953

Fan of pineapple?? This dessert looks moist and sweet! Luckily, they still make Del Monte crushed pineapple (I think!) so this should be easy to make from the recipe. A cool summer treat, anyone??....

Minute Rice Spanish Rice Pronto

Good Housekeeping
November, 1953

This zippy recipe would fit right into today's magazine ad. (well, except for the bacon drippings. I don't see that in a recipe nowadays!) If you are a fan of the peppery rice dishes this recipe is a winner!

Cambell's Creamed Chicken and Lively Macaroni and Cheese

Good Housekeeping,
November, 1953

This would've been a good recipe to add in the fall because it looks so warm and delicious. There is nothing like a soupy casserole for a down-home meal. Mm-mm-good! as Campbell's slogan says!
Tomato soup IN the mac and cheese! This one is a definite add to my list. And chicken in a biscuit, you can't beat that....

Jello Barbecue Salad

Good Housekeeping,
November 1953

I'm trying to imagine the taste of lemon jello mixed with tomato sauce....hmmm...could be savory. I've never had tomato aspic before, but I think the texture would go well with some barbecue just as the recipe name suggests.

Ranch House Casserole

This 1950's recipe in from a company called Ann Page that I've never heard of before. Is it the same company as the A&P grocery stores? They were not in the midwest so I'm unfamiliar. You'd have to substitute the Ann Page beans for some Van Kamp's or Bush's beans, but this dish would be a fantastic side to a summer barbecue! The recipe calls for a tablespoon of fat-you don't see that in recipes nowadays! Anyone know a good substitute??

Ann Pillsbury's Boston Peach Cream Dessert

I believe this recipe was printed in a Better Homes magazine around 1953. Peaches were at the height of their popularity in the 50's, but I'd love to see them make a modern day comeback. How delicious does this dessert sound....

Del Monte Peas Yorkshire Potato Pudding

This looks like a hearty side dish. The name is really unique-I've never heard of a potato pudding before-but the recipe looks like a winner! Check this out...

Betty Crocker Chocolate Marvel Pie

February, 1948
Better Homes and Gardens

Wowwwww....This looks like one delicious dessert! And not too complicated, just the way I like my recipes! It looks like all the ingredients are still on the shelves, so make this one for summer....

Stokely Peas Sweetheart Salad

February, 1948
Better Homes and Gardens

If the thought of gelatinous chicken broth and celery still makes you hungry, gives this recipe a go. If not, like me, just enjoy the recipe for it's vintage values....

Durkee's Margarine Lemon Meringue Coconut Pie

February, 1948
Better Homes and Gardens

Here's another item from the past that is no longer available, Durkee's Margarine. I had no idea Durkee's ever made margarine! Substitue it for any brand today and you have a delicious lemon meringue coconut pie for dessert. Sounds like summer.....

Crisco Crown Cake

February, 1948
Better Homes and Gardens

This cake looks simply devine! I sure would love a slice of that. And in a classic bundt cake shape! Fantastic
This one is on my To-do list.....

Stokely's Cape Cod Salad

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

I'm not sure when Stokely's when out of business. (I think they did, they don't sell them in my town, anyway) so this one will need a substitute for peas, like Green Giant. This recipe has the 40's staple gelatin in it again. If a gelled mold of celery, onions, and crab whets your appetite, go ahead and try this. (Sorry, it does nothing for me) I'll pass it on for anyone looking for an authentic, vintage gelatin meal.

Wesson Lafayette French Dressing

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

French dressing! The sweetness, the creaminess....mm-mm good! As this recipe says it's an 'old salad favorite'. My only question, where do you get Roquefort cheese??

Wesson Oil Velvet Waffles

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

Velvet waffles! This recipe really struck a chord! I sure would love to have these for breakfast....

Mazola Mustard Sauce and Super Cole Slaw

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

Summer means picnics, and nothing says Picnic more than cole slaw.
The mustard sauce would be a fun fondue for grillled hot dogs!
Grab a Dole pineapple cocktail, and sit down at the table for these summer sides....

Dole Pineapple Pacific Cocktail

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

Another cool summer treat. Pineapple and fruit cocktail were really common in recipes in the 40's and 50's when the tropics and the Pacific were hot new properties. Here's a simple little cocktail dessert. (A cocktail with no booze in it, how novel!)

Dole Pineapplesauce Cake

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

Fans of applesauce cake should like this new twist - PINEapplesauce cake! Do you like pineapples? Especially in the summertime? Then this is a recipe you'll want to add to your menu....

Karo Waffle French Toast and Bread Pudding

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

Waffles are all the rage 69 years later...who knew! These look like two mouthwatering delicious treats. They are a little extra work than mix and cook, but it looks worth it. Sunday morning brunch??.....

French's Tomato Dalad Sandwich

October, 1946
Better Homes and Gardens

I have a new crop of recipes from 1946, so we're going waaaaay back with these! First up, French's mustard tomato salad sandwiches. Back when mustard came in a jar!
These look like a tasty twist on the ham sandwich....Minced ham sounds cringe-worthy, I'd stick with called it 'ham salad'
