Campfire Marshmallow Molded Combination Salad
March, 1953
Better Homes and Gardens
This recipe has an ick factor - lemon gelatin...cabbage...carrots...and marshmallows??? Definitely a 50's idea. Do you think you could get anybody to eat this today? What do I know, I haven't made it and maybe the combination is truly tasty. How will you know if you don't try? (I probably won't be) If anything, it's good just to read this vintage idea-that might have sounded good at the time.

Velveeta Lenten Dishes
March, 1952
Better Homes and Gardens
Again, I just missed the boat on posting Lenten recipes, but these dishes look yummy enough for yearround delight. I'm especially digging the cheese omelet!

Ripe Olive Tuna Ring
March, 1953
Better Homes and Gardens
Here is a combo that's not really on my favorites radar, but if you're a fan of olives with tuna you will find this delicious. You might want to Google Pet Milk. I think it's evaporated milk, but it's not on the market anymore.

Crisco's Fancy Friday Fare
March, 1953
Better Homes and Gardens
I just missed posting these fish recipes for lenten Friday eaters. But if you aren't sick of fish yet here are some crispy fish recipes. ...I love how the old Crisco ads would describe foods as 'truly digestible'. Whatever that meant.

Minute Rice "Pick of the Pantry" meals
March, 1953
Better Homes and Gardens
Now hear is a hearty, simple recipe that would fit on any of today's menus. I'd try a different variety each night!

Del Monte 5-Fruit Anniversary Cake
March, 1953
Better Homes and Gardens
This sounds a bit like a fruitcake. A tasty party dessert...if you're a fan of pineapple and nutmeats.

Spam marinades
February, 1949
Here's a new way to (or old way???) to try your Spam, a fruity marinade. I think this looks pretty tasty....

Starkist Tuna Fondue
February, 1949
To me, this sounds pretty disgusting. But one person's disgusting might be another person's treat, so I'll post it anyway. Here is Starkist Tuna Fondue...

Wesson Oil Blush-Pear Salad
February, 1949
Leave it to people in the 40's to dye their pears pink. It looks the a simple and delicious recipe. I think I'll try this one out, too.

Sunkist Lemon Desserts
February, 1949
I've never known what to do with a fresh lemon besides fresh lemonade. But here a classic Sunkist lemons ad offers some ideas.

Baker's Coconut Cherry Coconut Pie
February, 1949
One thing I learned from browsing those vintage Better Homes magazines was that the 40's were all about coconut and Jello. Here's a recipe that combines the two. A tasty treat (not to me, not a fan of coconut either!) This pie defines a vintage 40's recipe. And the Sweetheart cake? No recipe needed! Just frost and sprinkle!

Hunt's Beef Stew
February, 1949
This meal doesn't sound too complicated and looks hearty and tasty! And...they still sell Hunt's tomato sauce! I'm going to make this one myself....

Baker's Chocolate Chocolate Dipped Banana pieces

Yum! These sound fantastic-and almost like something they sell in the store today! They show these on top of a chocolate cake...great idea!

Dole's Two Crust Pineapple Pie

Romany Steak Pie
February, 1949
This recipe features something called Heinz Cream of Tomato soup. I don't think Heinz makes soup anymore, so you would have to use Campbell's. And I don't think Cream of Tomato variety is available either. You could experiment, or just enjoy the vintage ad....It sure sounds delicious!

Martha Logan's Sweet Potato Prem Loaf
February, 1949.
Prem looks like a version of Spam. Honestly, I've never heard of it before. You would have to substitute Spam for Prem in this recipe because I don't think Prem's been available for several decades. Bing's never even heard of it before according to my search of Prem. I'm not a big fam of Spam-like meats myself, but if you want to give this a try....

Crisco's Happy Birthday Cake from February of 1949
This cake looks rich and delicious! Healthy? Eh. But that's not important if you're going to 1949 authenticity. Here is the original ad and the recipe!.
First Post!
I got the idea for this blog while flipping through some vintage Better Homes and Gardens I got at a garage sale a few summer ago. So many of the ads featured recipes and I thought it would be fun to share them with the world to bring back some of these nostalgic meals. So here we go...!
